Kindness starts from within

And just like that, 2024 is already coming to an end! As the holiday season approaches, many of us feel a mix of excitement and stress. This time of year is often associated with togetherness, generosity and joy, but it can also bring loneliness and a significant amount of pressure—especially for older adults and their caregivers.

Between volunteering, shopping for the perfect gifts, attending countless events and lending a hand wherever needed, it’s easy to overextend ourselves. These well-intentioned acts can leave us feeling drained and even more isolated if we don’t take time to care for ourselves.

Self-care is important, sure. But how?

Recognizing the pressure we are feeling is the first step toward easing it. It’s okay to say no to certain commitments, scale back traditions or simply take a moment to rest. The most meaningful gift you can give your loved ones—and yourself—is the gift of your presence and kindness.

Kindness starts within, so this holiday season, practice self-compassion. Check in with yourself regularly and remind yourself that it’s perfectly acceptable to prioritize your own well-being. Let go of perfection and embrace simplicity to help make the holidays more enjoyable for everyone, including yourself.

If you notice changes in your loved one over the holidays

We often reconnect and spend more time with family and friends over the holiday season. It then that we may notice changes in loved ones that raise concerns. Perhaps their home seems more cluttered than usual or they’re struggling with tasks that used to come easily. These changes could be signs of declining autonomy and it’s natural to feel uncertain about how to address them.

If you’re worried about a loved one’s safety or well-being, you’re not alone. Join us at this month’s Wellness Café titled “Navigating Home Care and Autonomy Changes.” This supportive discussion will offer practical advice on recognizing red flags, understanding care options and having those difficult but necessary conversations.

As we close out the year, I want to take a moment to say how grateful I am to all who participated in our Well 50+ and Caregivers’ Circle programs. Connecting with each of you has truly been the best part of my job. Your stories, resilience, and kindness inspire me every day and I look forward to continuing this journey with you in the coming year.
