Do your heart good

Love is in the air! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and that can only mean one thing: It’s time to let your heart speak for itself.  In case you didn’t know, February is Heart Health Awareness Month. To mark the occasion, I invite you to show your heart some love and do a health check on yourself.

How is your heart doing these days?
Just like any healthy relationship, a strong heart depends on multiple factors. Of course, if you are able to rest up by getting a good night’s sleep, your heart will get you through the day without skipping a beat. On the other hand, high or prolonged stress—even if it starts in your mind—can take its toll on your heart. If you live with chronic stress, you may not notice how high your stress levels are.  You can keep track using self-reporting tools like the Perceived Stress Scale. Of course, healthy, balanced eating habits are also a major factor for a strong heart. Don’t miss Nutrition Month in March, when registered dietitian Inès Auclair-Mangliar will teach us how to eat well to age well.

A special anniversary
February 14 marks one year of working as Caregivers’ Circle coordinator. Can you believe a whole year has gone by since I started this wonderful job? Words cannot describe how grateful I am for this fantastic and caring community.

As of this January, my colleague Claire Quenville has begun focusing all her energy to empower and support the wonderful folks at McGreevy Manor. With that in mind, my mandate is now expanded to include all 50+ adults in the English-speaking community. I look forward to pursuing my efforts to promote health among all English-speaking caregivers and older adults in our community, and to supporting you as best I can.
