Well, this spring could not have taken more of a surprise twist when all of us in Quebec City saw a global pandemic come to town. To top it off, now it’s upended everyone’s summer plans too!
All of us on the Wellness Centre team understand your feelings. We have been hard at work finding innovative ways to offer support and help to the community in this trying time, despite the obstacles. We’ve found ways to develop and continue essential services calling upon our colleagues, partners, peers and volunteers to work just a little differently.
We’ve also had the privilege of seeing this pandemic through a unique lens. Since the very start of COVID-19, we received an outpouring of generosity, solidarity, and kindness from community members and volunteers like you who are concerned for others and asking what you can do to help. We’ve had the heartening task of channeling your goodwill and compassion into our Temporary COVID-19 Response Efforts, especially in terms of transporting people in need to essential medical appointments and doing grocery shopping.
In line with public health recommendations, however, if you are a volunteer who is 65 or over or are in an at-risk category, we have been refraining from calling upon you at this time. That being said, our much-valued older volunteers are more than welcome to join the remote volunteering opportunities. You can help out from the comfort of your home, be it by writing letters to residents of Saint Brigid’s Home or by making friendly calls. Why not consider making a special kind of donation of your creativity, skills or talents from a distance?
As the weeks pass, our operations are now drumming to a new beat. We’ve come out with specialized online training (to access, login to your MyImpactPage), distributed personal protective equipment volunteer kits and communicated guidelines about how you can safely get back to volunteering (or carry on doing so), but again, just a little differently, and according to volunteer procedures that we have adapted to the current reality.
Furthermore, although our regular on-site group activities (usually nurtured by your volunteer hands) are still on standby, be sure to check out our online calendar to see all of the workshops and activities that we have been able to convert into a virtual format, including the following:
- Take-A-Break Drop In, which now a virtual get-together
- Online prenatal classes
- Virtual breastfeeding support
- Is My Child On Track virtual workshop
- Online art therapy for caregivers
- Caregiver support online group
Rest assured that we are working towards finding ways to see you in person again soon. This summer, we will stay patiently attuned to government updates, adjust accordingly, and do our best to keep you informed of our progress.
