Gratitude and the gift of self-care

Hello everyone and welcome to fall! Once again, the air is crisp, and the colours are changing. Autumn is, by far, my favourite season. In my eyes, it is a time to let go of the old to make room for the new. How do we make room for the new? By giving thanks!

According to a recent article on Positive Psychology.com, there are at least 28 benefits of gratitude:

“In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”

Giving thanks is a gift to yourself. When you start expressing gratitude for the good things in your life, you will find that more gifts will follow everyday. I’ll go a step further and say that being grateful for things that even haven’t happened yet can bring still more goodness.

Practicing gratitude each day

Of course, there is also the traditional celebration of Thanksgiving that comes with autumn.  What a great time to express our thankfulness for the simple things in our lives that we often take for granted.

But you don’t need a special occasion to practice gratitude. Beauty surrounds us in every moment all year long, we just have to pause to take notice.

Here are a few practices that may help you practice daily gratitude.

  • Start by creating a list of the everyday things for which you are grateful.
  • Send gratitude to yourself through your whole body, your breath, and all your senses.
  • Be confident in the knowledge that the earth supports us and that we are resilient beings.
  • Keep it simple: Give thanks for your comfy bed that allows you to rest, the first breath you when you awake in the morning, your morning coffee, the roof over your head, the list goes on.
  • Do something nice for someone else and for no reason, like calling or texting a friend or family member to thank them for something or wish them well.
  • Be kind to yourself and have fun! Laugh, make yourself a tea, exercise, dance, sing, listen to music, paint, write, read a book, take a nature walk, enrol in a course.
  • Be part of your community: You may find an activity of interest on our events calendar

By taking care of yourself first and being grateful for the gifts in your life, you are likely to feel happier and increase your sense of well-being. I encourage you to try it out and see how your life will change.
