Celebrating men and caregivers!

Hello everyone, I trust you are doing well and taking good care of yourselves in this cozy time of year. Although November can be gloomy at times, it’s actually quite a busy month, full of exciting events and important dates.

Send love to those who look after others

Caregivers’ Week is just around the corner! Between November 6 and 12, be sure to highlight the selfless gestures and the presence of the caregivers you know, including yourself. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, caregivers are a cornerstone of the Québec healthcare system. Whether providing physical or psychological support, defending the interests of their loved ones or acting as guardians of their memories, caregivers facilitate the work of healthcare professionals.

Do you know someone who’s caring for a loved one with an incapacity? WE at the Wellness Centre have some ideas to celebrate the caregivers in your life. If you are looking after someone, join us for our FREE Self-Massage workshop and learn how to improve your overall well-being using a yoga ball. If you know someone caring for a loved one, be sure to share our Caregivers’ Week posts on the WE Facebook page or send them one of our FREE Special Love Delivery postcards for caregivers. Contact Anaïs to have yours!

Looking out for the men in our lives

If you are not familiar with the Movember movement, November is also a time to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and male suicide. If you get the chance, I encourage you to engage in a dialogue on any of these three topics with the men in your life. Given the predominance of prostate cancer among men aged 50 and over, I also invite you to read the questions to ask your healthcare provider about prostate cancer.

Let’s stay in touch as the weather gets colder

If you’re like me, you tend to stay at home when the thermostat drops below zero. Some people, however, may also feel the need to get together with others as daylight fades. At the Wellness Centre, we’ve got you covered! Join us in person this month for the Brain Power Drop-in on November 7 and 21, or for the Caregivers Circle in the northern perimeter on November 15. In addition, you’re welcome to attend Death 101: The Legal Aspects of Dying with lawyer Richard Goldman, taking place online on November 23.

Anaïs Fortin-Maltais, Well 50+ & Caregivers Program Coordinator

Looking forward to seeing you around, either online or in person!
